Contact the credit bureaus by phone and/or by mail if you see any
incorrect or disputed information in your report:
Experian: 888-397-3742 www.experian.com
Equifax: 800-685-1111 www.equifax.com
TransUnion 800-916-8800 www.transunion.com
You should also contact the vendor who provided the inaccurate or
disputed information to the credit bureau to possibly gain their support
for making the correction.
Pay bills on or before the due date
Keep account balances low on credit cards and other "revolving
credit".
Pay off your debt rather than moving it around to different accounts and
pay down your revolving credit.
If you have been making payments on your credit cards, but know that there
are better interest rates that you can get, call your current card company
and ask them to match your other offers.
You do not have to close unused credit cards as a short-term strategy to
raise your score, but you should close un-used or un-needed accounts (with
department stores, and similar types of cards) to reduce the overall
amount of credit you can access.
Do not open a lot of new credit cards, "old" credit is better
than new.
If you are shopping for a large item, or for credit terms, do not provide
your credit card to all possible vendors, a high number of inquires from
companies that run your credit history reduces your credit score.
If you have been managing credit for a short time, don't open a lot of new
accounts too rapidly.
